Quilts for America
Approximately a month ago my daughter and myself started a project called "Quilts for America". Our mission is to send a quilt to every victim/or victims family of the September 11th attack. We started small with a couple we made and then we began to branch out by spreading the word around campus and our community. I have had a very nice response. Fox 11 News from Green Bay came down and did a story also. My daughter and I are sewing and cutting and sewing every free moment we have. This project has been a very healing process for everyone who has joined. And without my communities support I would not have gotten as far as I have. 80 Quilts! However we have a long way to go. Both my daughter and I are committed to making the 5000 mark, no matter if it takes us 6 months or 6 years.
I have been contacting as many quilting groups as possible and asking for their support in any way. Two groups have responded
in my area. They have contributed 11 complete quilts, combined
They run in various sizes. small twin bed size to lap size
(cozy quilt my grandmother called them). I started with a theme of red, white and blue or any combination. There are many
beautiful materials out there that cover this. I have told the people turning in the squares to me to be sewed to write a
message on some of their squares with fabric markers or paint. I have gotten some very
inspiring and thoughts from the heart written on these squares. Some people choose just to give me material because they don't have time or
they say they can't sew. And that is fine with me. The squares are either 7,8 or 9 inch squares.
I tell everyone just be creative and they have been! If your group could help in some way we would be very
appreciative. I have enclose my email address here at work and all phones numbers where you can reach me. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I pray you
will join our project.
